About

Our Mission

The Writing Center is a welcoming space where students and tutors collaborate on writing projects. We believe all students are writers, and we invite them to bring in any type of writing—academic, civic, personal, and multimedia texts—at any stage in the composing process. Student-writers should arrive ready to engage with their own work while peer tutors ask questions, listen actively, respond to individual needs, and foster strategic revision. Our practices prioritize long-term growth and aim to expand each writer’s capacity to make intentional and reflective choices.

Recognizing the ethical dimensions of writing, we try, in both our tutoring and programs, to challenge inequities and advocate for students of all linguistic backgrounds, identities, and abilities.

Beyond tutoring, we offer faculty development for teaching writing across the disciplines, help schools statewide start and sustain peer writing centers, and sponsor programs across campus that enhance educational access and academic excellence. To ensure that our practices are evidence-based and contribute to the scholarship on writing center theory and practice, our undergraduate tutors, graduate assistants, staff, and directors all engage in research and present at conferences. These initiatives are integral to the center’s identity as a place that embraces the full teaching, research, and service priorities of the university.
